David,
Yuk .. yuk ... yuk ... technology takes a bath ..... sorry ... had to
get that out of my system .... sigh ... HOW come it took you this long
to determine you were getting trash fuel readings from the Stack
??!??? (I know .. you were busy .... ). What they are talking about is
a variable resistance float level device ... instead of the "hey ...
guess what ... were seeing air down here" contact closure type of
device. Now that you mention it ... you would think that the tank in
the VMAX would be idea for a "real" fuel level sending unit ... since
it is not straddling the frame etc .... You can find these sending
units everywhere ... for boat tanks, from JAZ ... who makes fuel cells
etc, Autometer or anyone who sells fuel gauges. If you find something
small you still have to get it in there, (a hole), and it will be
subject to fuel sloshing etc ... A "LAZY" person's alternative would
be to use a relay that would be normally open ... use it to feed the
Stack a fixed resistance, (whatever it wants or can be programmed for
to indicate a full tank). Wire the relay to lock-up with the ignition
"on" and with it seeing the first shot of ground from your current
"contact closure" sending unit. When the relay operates and locks up
... have it send a "different" resistance to the Stack which you will
have programmed etc to indicate an empty fuel tank .... At least that
way ... you will see "full" until the first flicker of the low fuel
lamp, (if you still had one ;>), and then you will see "empty".
Turning the key off will release the locked up relay and it will stay
that way until it sees a shot of ground from the contact closure
again, (the next time you get empty). Perhaps someone has fitted a
"real" fuel sending unit to one of these tanks and will post ....
As far as the shift lamp ...... I don't have one of these and
hopefully this has happened to someone else and they will post ... but
I can't believe that the electronics in this unit aren't sealed or at
least coated with RTV ...... I think you are dust ... but not because
you blew anything up in the unit ... only because you have a tracking
short .... If you are lucky ... you can take the unit apart and clean
the circuit board etc with contact cleaner and a toothbrush ... and
you might luck out !!
Nice to hear from you ... haven't seen you post in a while .........
