Kelly,

Your remarks about wind drag being the prime problem with fuel mileage are
"dead-on" the mark. As someone that has worked in wind-tunnels I know of
what you speak. The enemies of fuel economy in rank are:

            First WIND DRAG
            Second ACCELERATION (rapid & repeated)
            Third WEIGHT
            Forth RPM

A 100 lb girl on a bicycle pedaling along at 20 mph or so has to
forcibly move a full TON of air molecules aside every minute. If speed
rises, the mass of air molecule that have to be pushed aside goes up WITH
THE SQUARE OF THE SPEED!

In English, that means the girl trying to go 40 mph (twice the speed)
now would be shoving 4 TONS of air aside per minute ( the square)

Lets see,,, a 250+lb bubba on a V-MAx smoking 0 to 100+ at every chance
and having to part a hole in the air the size of a coke machine gets less
than 30 mpg.... Hmmmmm, sounds about right to me.
