M. Sigworth,
If you were hoping for a limited edition classic you have the wrong
bike. There have probably been more Viragos on the road than Canadian
pennies in Watertown, New York. Viragos started appearing in 1981,
(920cc), with a major styling change that looked like the bike you
have ... starting in 1984, (700/1000cc) and upping that to 750/1100
versions in 1986 .... since 1984 ... excluding the <700cc versions
they all were almost identical except for minor cosmetic changes. I
think 1999 was the last production year with the 1100 being the last
remaining model in the lineup. The 750s and 1000cc versions have the
same stroke so you can convert a 750 to a 1000 buy just changing the
bolt on cylinders and pistons, (and you don't even have to unbolt the
rods from the crankshaft). Clymer makes a nice service manual for the
whole line of these bikes and there are plenty of Virago sites on the
Web .... There are many Vmaxes that may be wearing Virago grab/sissy
bars, adjustable handle bars and chrome shock donuts ..... it would be
difficult to find anyone who has not ridden, owned or still has part
of .... or a whole Virago in their possession, (myself included), ....
but this really is a Vmax technical site and we attempt to limit
ourselves to that topic for the benefit of all the members.
