Well, I hope I'm not beating this thing to death, but figured you all might
be interested in an update. Maybe what I've found will come in useful to
someone.
When I got the bike back from the dealer, the tire pressure was
higher...around 35/39. I thought this might be the cause of the shake (since
the manual recommends 32/32). Lowered to this pressure with no change in
shake. So air pressure is not the culprit. (tho I think I'll go back to the
higher numbers now, thanks).
Did the furber fix last nite. Simple, right? NOT!
Didn't have proper spanner wrench so we couldn't torque the bottom
nut....used hammer and punch and played it by ear. Couldn't get the forks to
"fall" to the side without bouncing unless we really cranked on the bottom
nut. Got it to a point where it would fall ok to one side, but turning the
forks to the other side produced a binding feel.
Decided to look at the bearings. Ripped off the forks. Bearings and races
were OK but needed to be repacked. Did that, put everything back together,
retightened bottom nut. Ended up much tighter than 10 ft. lbs. I'm sure, but
forks now fall smoothly and evenly to each side without bounce. Put the top
nut back (Yamaha manual says fingertight...) but tightened it rather solidly
(had to do that to line up the spaces for the pin to fit)...put the rubber
washer and pin back in....headshake is gone.
I'm curious about several things though. I'm wondering if there is still
something wrong with the tires and I've just compensated for it by the furber
fix (will have dealer check tires again) and whether my old tires were just
worn into a pattern that did not produce the shake anymore (OEM
Bridgestones). Also, can I do any damage to the bike by overtightening the
bottom nut (like I said, the forks still fall freely but I'm sure that nut is
at way more than 10 ft. lbs....Yomama recomends 2.2 I think!!!). Also, the
original furber directions specify putting the rubber washer back on (on top
instead of in between top and bottom nut), but later directions specify steel
or aluminum washer to be placed BETWEEN top and bottom nut. Is there any
problem with the way I have done it...or any of this...that you guys can
comment on?????
I sure am taking the long way around to fixing that carb problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!
