My chromy reasons for chrome!
I've got the original header pipes on my '82 Maxim 750 & '85 V-Max.
They have never turned any colors despite some long, hard rides over
the years. I use Simonize chrome polish several times a year on them.
My Max pipes look factory fresh with 27K miles.
There's only a couple of small rust spots that have been forming over the
last
10 years(!) or so on the 750 pipes where rocks have really dinged the
chrome.
These require just a bit more attention. Any coating will suffer similarly
from such abuse.
As far as rust from the inside? The baffles in the 'cones' (not really
cans) on the 750 have rusted out before, but never to the point where the
exterior chrome started flaking off.

For the chrome, like any chrome, if you keep it clean it wont rust. I son't
know about the inner surface though. Don't they make a chrome pipe polish
that cleans the blueing and prevents ot from coming back?

> Chrome will turn colors and is more prone to rust. The Jett Hott coating
is also supposed to hold in heat and help with exhaust scavenging. You can
also polish the Jett Hott and make it look very close to chrome.
