My '85 also has a slight tappet noise that comes and goes. I check the
valves every spring and except for one valve needing a shim change at about
10,000 miles they haven't changed at all in the following 60,000 miles. This
motor has a very stable valve train. Get an opinion from some familiar with
the V-Max.

Subject: When (or who) to rebuild a motor?
Date: Thu, 13 Apr 2000 20:27:32 -0700 (PDT)
Three weeks ago I purchased a '96 V-Max in showroom shape with 4500 miles.
My Yamaha mechanic (for 10 years) hears a valve tap noise that comes and
goes. He has checked everything down to cam chain adjuster but cant find
the root cause for the noise. My mechanic now suggests rebuilding the
engine.
Any thoughts this problem. Or any recommendations on engine rebuilders in
the New Jersey east coast area? Thanks.
