Every response was NOT to rebuild the engine and/or FIND a new mechanic.
Based on this advice I will bring the V-Max home as is and just run and
enjoy it for now. My mechanic informed me today that the valve tap type
noise goes away when the engine is under load. (He placed the V-Max against
a wall to stress the engine.) Thanks again for all the great advice!
