Charles,
The manual actually says you don't have to check the valve clearance
until 26K. I have always done my own 600 mi .. and one more at 1500
before changing over to a regular maintenance schedule ... and usually
in between there somewhere is a valve clearance verification. I can't
imagine not doing it ... as it would be unbearable not knowing ... I
have also .. recommended at least on the Royal list to remove the
pilot mixture screw caps ASAP after delivery and get those screws out
of there and coated with something .... (most of them need a 1/2 turn
on the screws anyhow to stop popping and deceleration backfire).
However .. neither of these activities are supported in the owner's
manual maintenance schedule. From what I am getting back from the
Royal/Venture list is that many dealers do not actually check even
when instructed to do so ... and when their back is against the wall
they try to price the operation out of feasibility ... (ie .. charging
2-3 hours labor etc).

That is why it is hard for me to accept that valve clearance
is only done after 26K miles, if something is wrong it will
be too late by then.

What is the dealers policy regarding this matter in the
US,or what does your owners manual say?
