fuel pump failure

I am having a fuel pump failure because of too much vacuum pressure in the 
gas tank.  Opening the tank and relieving the pressure fixes the problem, but 
I don't believe this should be happening.  If anyone has any info on why this 
is happening or how to fix it I would appreciate it.
