Are you sure that the shrieking noise is coming from the engine? I also have
an '85 with 80,000 miles on it and I occasionally experience a loud
shrieking noise that lasts about the same duration. I know that the sound is
coming from the speedometer. If I tap on the face of it while riding, or try
to tilt it, it quiets right down. It usually only happens in cooler weather
and around 45 - 80 mph when accelerating aggressively. I haven't taken it
off or checked the cable for fraying or anything yet so I'm not sure why
it's doing this. This could be what you are hearing too.
