Tom, I won' disagree that B&B is a good thing to do on the road to serious
hp but may not be the first choice to add a *little bit *of power. If you
are planning on splitting the cases anyway then by all means spend the time
putting the engine back together right. But the IMHO the best bang for the
buck for hp is a pipe and jet kit. After that it gets expensive...

This week-end I had a lot torn off my 97 while putting in solid mounts.
Since the Hindle 4-1 was now sitting on the shelf, as a bit of a whim I
decided to install the 'ol stock exhaust on the machine just to see what it
felt like again. If it felt okay I could use it for my upcoming trip this
summer as I really don't need a loud high perf pipe for cruising 5000 miles
on the highway... Anyway, the difference is fairly pronounced. The bike
pulls a little more strongly with the stocker from 2-4K, about the same from
4-7K but then at higher than 8K the bike appears to be choked, whereas with
the 4-1 it would just keeping pulling strong right to the red line. Gone are
the roll on wheelies. On the plus side I don't have to worry about waking
the neighbours anymore although I couldn't stand the complete quiet so I
popped a couple of small holes in the back of the exit pipes ; ) .

cheers, Terry
