V-MAX COMPULSIVES; I just got my V-Max back together after 2 1/2 months.
About Daytona time my transmission began popping in and out of 2nd gear
under hard acceleration especialy in the lower RPM's so naturally it had
to come apart. Lucky for me and old friend of mine had just quit his job
at the YAMAHA Shop as a mechanic, so I put him to work. I ordered the
gears and sent them off to get undercut and indexed. It is a process of
machining the dogs on the gears so that they mesh easier and match the
adjoining gears better. At the same time I negotiated the purchase of a
project bike that never really got off the ground. In other words I got
a bunch of new parts and a V-Max (CHERRY BOMB MAX ) to ride while mine
was being rebuilt. Many of these parts I sold to listers. Almost all
were new or nearly new. :-) I did keep some of the pieces. These
included DYMAGS, GALFER ROTORS AND LINES, MEZ4's, Chrome SCOOPS and Grab
Rail and many odds and ends. Unforunately I didn't get the parts for the
value of the bike. I did have to pay extra, but I'm not complaining I
did get a fair shake. I sold CHERRY BOMB MAX yesterday to Brent who is a
Navy pilot who lives in JAX and soon to become a VMOA member.
Below is a list of improvements and how they have worked out performance
wise
FURBUR SOLID MOUNTS - They work great but but be prepared for the
vibration. After 6000 rpm you get a serious buzz. The mounts make the
bike feel extremely solid and no hint of that high speed turn wobble.
Very, very stable is the best way to describe the results but remember
in fifth gear going over 75mph you are keenly aware of how busy that
motor is. I've got to get some good gripps. Any recomendations?
MEZ4's with DYMAGS. It must be the shape of those radials but I never
noticed in the past a tire that was perfectly happy at any angle. Just
place the bike in a curve and it obediently goes there, change you mind,
NO Problem. These tires are like a good dog, just tell it what to do and
it does it happily. These tires don't have a favorite angle they like
all angles and quite a few I probably don't have the skill to
experience. They are so good you quickly take them for granted. The
DYMAGS went on very easily and complement the MEZ4's. I've done 125mph
and the bike is absolutely stable.
GALFER ROTORS - These are thinner than the stock units. They look
exeptionaly nice with the drilled out holes. I don't quite have 200
miles on them, so the pads aren't broke in on them completely. I have
felt the difference in stopping ability with every new mile as they
brake in.
PROGRESSIVE SHOCKS I went from 11.5" to 12.5" to make up for the drop in
height of .5" at the rear and 1" on the front. Even with the taller rear
shock I'm having a little clearence problem. Left turn hard bumps grind
kick stand, right hand grind HINDLE. My next step is to drop forks .25".
Maybe that will help. The bottom scraping only happens on mid curve
bumps.
R&D MOTORSPORTS TRANSMISSION. John Furbur suggested using this company
to index and undercut my gears since I was going to have my transmission
apart anyway. They are very familiar with V-Max transmissions. In fact
they do PCW's according to rumors. Be prepared to wait 4 or 5 weeks
before you get it back. This was the biggest hold up to reassembling my
bike. The results are a very crispy shift action. Get close to a shift
and it is there. It feels like the throws are shorter. The reason for
indexing the dogs on the gears is to make sure they make contact with
the adjoining gear at the same time. When gears come from the factory
they aren't always perfect. While I was there one of the machinist
showed me a new gear set from a local Yamaha shop that he was indexing
because the mechanic on the bike just would not put in a gear set as off
as this one was. Now that is a good mechanic!
THANK's TO;
ROY RICHARDS- V-Maxers you can't buy PARTS UNLIMITED any cheaper than
with ROY. Got my Progressive Shocks and my Memphis Shades Shooter from
ROY.
JOHN FURBUR- Terrific fit on the solid mounts, but don't I get foam
grips with them. I guess I just got spoiled with rubber mounts.
SPEED and SPORT- Good Chrome fast service 713-921-0235
I have pictures on my web site below. CHEERS.
