Indeed. Oil contains detergents to keep the engine clean, and it turns dark
because those detergents are doing their job. Seeing as how my oil turns
dark after a couple hundred miles in any of my vehicles, I'm not about to
worry about it.
If you're really worried about oil breakdown, spend the money and have a
sample analyzed after, say, 3000 miles or so. If it's not showing any
significant breakdown at that point, you might as well not waste your time
and money changing it any sooner. I not recommending extending intervals
way out to 7500 miles or anything like that, just taking a reasonable
approach to the whole process.
