Thomas,
You can slide a piece of clear tubing over the little black drains
hoses ... get the carb stack level, (shim the bike halfway close
anyhow), and open the drain screw ... Hold your clear plastic tubing
high enough so that the fuel doesn't run out and then turn the key on
for one fuel pump cycle before taking your reading, (to fill up the
carb bowl). The actual measurement is supposed to be from the level
you attain to the center of the slide and there is infact a "line"
cast into the carb housing on the side of the slide area.
When I checked the levels this way it was hard to measure directly
against these casting marks so I just put a mark on the tubing and
made sure it was aligned with the top of the bottom chrome mounting
bracket .... took all my readings, (level reached above the mounting
bracket mark), and then subtracted my level measurement from 55mm,
(which is the distance from the top of the mounting bracket to the
center of the slide) ... The resultant value should be about 15mm ..
sooooooo .. your level should rise about 1 1/4 inch above the top of
the mounting bracket, (30mm), if you are in the general vicinity of
where you are supposed to be. Of course .. as you take the reading for
each carb .. just close the bowl drain screw .. dump the fuel into a
glass and put the drain hose back in it's holster ... nice and clean
.. if you use a clean glass you can put the fuel back in the bike when
you are done. Don't forget to operate the fuel pump each time you do a
carb ... as the fuel that runs into the clear plastic tubing will of
course lower the bowl level.
If #2 is seeping out the needle jet on idle then be sure to make sure
your carbs are synced ... If you have the throttle plate open
excessively on #2 the needle jet might be seeing some of that vacuum
and it doesn't take much to pull fuel out of there.
Of course if you are off .. you get to take everything apart ... sigh
......... but there is a really nice line cast across the back of the
fuel bowl .. and you can put a pencil mark right on the carb, (15mm
below or whatever level you decide to use) ... check them the same
way, (except use the mark on the back), after making any adjustments
and before you put the stack back together ....
