Yo Steve:

What I was thinking was to remove only the leg of the centre stand that
sticks up.  There is a square flange on this leg which could be mated to an
identical flange on the leg.  If the cut off portion was to have a rod
welded into the centre allowing it to slide into the part of the stand left
behind and dowels were welded to the flange, then the leg could be removed
and easily reinserted if one wanted to put the bike up on the stand.

I'm not sure if this makes sense.
