Hi Fred,
You might want to consider adding Nissin 4 piston calipers (CBR 900RR etc.)
to your early V-max forks. John Furbur at Rocky Mountain Sportmax:

has adapters to bolt them to the early V-max forks. He may also have the
calipers available as well. This conversion will allow you to keep your stock
rotors and make use of your existing master cylinder. I believe you would need
to change rotors, master cylinder, and design your own mounting brackets if you
chose to use the R-1 components.
I also have Don's filter adapter on my '85...........it's great!
