My suggestion to ANYONE that is having starting related noise that is
comming from under the flywheel/stator cover to investigate before it
becomes a costly problem. My one-way was making a terrible racket every
once in awhile, especially if the battery was low. I was pretty sure that
the clutch was bad so I ordered one from K&N ($63.44, 92.30 regular, 78.08
HSLM, really love those K&N guys) Harmonic balancer from Sears, about
$23.00 and some proper bolts (ones with the balancer were not long enough),
about $3 or so. When I got the flywheel off it was redily apparent what the
problem was. The three bolts that hold the clutch to the flywheel had just
come loose!!! I ended up not needing the new clutch. Just 3 bolts which I
wasn't did not even charged for. The manual says to locktite and peen over
the bolt ends. The bolts were peened from the factory which was the only
thing that kept them from falling into the engine. (they were all 2-4 turns
before they even made contact much less tight!!) But none of them had
locktite on them!!! Mine is a '94, and it seems that alot of the culprit
bike seem to be in that area. Maybe the factory screwed up for awhile. I
would even go so far to suggest that everyone give the starter clutch a look
at this off season, that is of course unless you live in Hawaii like me and
there is NO OFF SEASON..............sorry had to throw that in. :-)
BTW my old clutch is for sale, nothing wrong with it for $40 shipped in the
US.

Subject: clutch engage click
> my 93 max with 30k miles has developed a clicking sound when i engage the
clutch. the sound appears to be coming from the left hand side of the
engine, behind the rear cover. the sound is not loud nor does it happen at
every stop/start, but i would like to resolve it if possible. bike has no
noticeable change in performance, nor does it "feel" different while
driving. it's just a singular click that's driving me nuts. any thoughts
appreciated.
