A few of us have been watching the tech list "carburetor bruhahaha" going on
now for the past many months and have been addressing various aspects of the
problem separately. One of the cures proposed by one of the tech list guys
with a blown Max (John Baltera?) is that of using a Weber DCOE (sidedraft)
carb. That started us speculating among ourselves on the possibility of
mounting Weber downdraft carbs on the engine. Information and parts for
tuning these carbs are readily available -- and the carbs themselves can be
found (used or new) and, if not cheap, are less costly than flatslides.(The
dunebuggy guys love these things.)

The IDA, IDF and DCNF Weber models seem best suited to this application. The
fact that they have accelerator pumps should help eliminate the flatspot
characteristic of the CV carbs and, by careful selection of venturis and
jets, bogging under load might be avoidable even tho the smallest of the
DCNF series has 36 mm bores and the smallest IDF has 40 mm bores. Larger
sizes up to 48 mm are available.

I've placed and photographed a 40IDF carb on my Venture motor w/max heads
and v-boost just to see how it would fit and what kind of trouble it would
be to make adapters.

I also took a shot using Venture carb mounts and no v-boost. The adapters
would be very simple to fabricate in either case and even though the engine
is out of a frame, it looks like there would be no clearance problems of any
sort -- except the stock Weber air cleaners wouldn't clear the frame. Some
sock filters or K&N individual filters could be used.

I sent a version of this (off list) to a few of the more vocal and/or
knowledgable list participants but they (mostly) didn't have any comments or
suggestions.

I probably won't pursue this further, I have too much on my plate as it is.
(Tho, if someone has another 40IDF to sell for a modest price, I could be
tempted.) Just thot it might be of interest to someone not wanting to lay
down the big bucks for flatslides when there are low cost alternatives
available.
