Been lurkin' for quite awhile. Just a couple of comments.
Mechanically, you guys are out of my league but have helped me to
understand the idiosyncracies of my first motorcycle in twenty years.
Despite it's deficiencies, I love it.
Gas mileage - My Vmax is totally stock. I must be the little old lady
rider that D.Clarke was referring to since my highway mileage is almost
18 km/litre or a range of over 250 kms to empty at 120 km/h. That's 10
km/h over the maximum speed limit here in Atlantic Canada, information
for most of you that apparently don't have to experience the
consequences of having speed limits. Toying around town, I can take that
mileage down to 12km/litre although I have to be riding quite hard and
pushing (OK, probably exceeding) the limit of my skills.
Long range riders may appreciate this tip.
Comfort over the long haul can be as much a factor of your clothing as
your seat. I have bicycled many thousands of kilometres. Once I
discovered bicycling shorts (yes, with the pad) I would never go
without. Now, I wear these for all long rides on my Vmax.
I do full to reserve(or)empty rides with very little discomfort, most of
which is related to my legs and my preference for the rear pegs when
cruising. Also, when using these pegs the rider is put in a physical
position that exposes a sensitive area more than usual and requires a
firm method of holding everything in place.
The bicycling shorts work well whichever pegs you use, IMHO.
And if you're trying to squeeze in every little bit of gas that you can
then you should note: After filling your tank to brim, if you wait a few
seconds the level will go down a few inches. If you top it again, it
will again go down. You can do this 4 or 5 times until fuel overflows
from an internal tube onto the ground. It's a small amount of fuel and
I am probably defeating the purpose of the overflow arrangement but if
you're riding into unknown territory then every bit counts.
