Relax and don't worry about the Magna. You'll eat him. I've currently got an '84' V65 Magna and a '00' Max. I've been riding the Max religiously since I got it back in August until I got rear-ended last week. Now the bike's in the shop waiting for parts and I'm back on the Magna again. I love the Magna. It's a nice ride, but I miss the acceleration of my Max. I can't wait to get on it and get on it, if you know what I mean.
There are some mods that he may have done to the Magna to sped it up a little, but not enough to take the Max. And since he doesn't seem to mind running around without a 2nd gear, he doesn't sound like the type who'd do the mods anyway. So go get him. Don't get too lax, 'cause the V65 is quick (why I bought it in the first place), but stay on it through the race and he'll never bug you about racing again. He may even decide to trade up.
