Side cover inserts

Yamaha sells the side cover inserts that fit into the middle gear cover and 
the water pump cover.  I was told that the original insert must be drilled 
out. Im wondering what holds the new ones in.
I already have the new inserts  they came on the bike.  But i have to remove 
the middle gear insert to have it chromed.  Anybody?
