I might have missed something on this thread, but I have a charging story
that may or may not help Phil (and others out). After I had completed my
carb cleanout project I started the bike and stood back to admire her in the
darkness. I noticed a blue-ish light coming from under the instrument
cluster. Hmm. That's odd, I thought. So I shut the bike down and removed
the tachometer assembly. I found that the wire terminals were shorting
against the tachometer bracket that holds the cluster to the frame. There
were tell-tale "weld spots" on the bracket. I electrical-taped the metal
and the arcing went away. I thought that I had a charging problem or a
cheap battery, as my battery just wouldn't hold a charge.
So for what it's worth, check your bracket / instrument cluster and look for
"weld spots" and possible shorting.
