Actually they are illegal. But law enforcement officers are not the most intelegant
people in the world!!! Most states have laws that "prohibit the attachment of an
external fuel cell that would cause rupture in the event of a roll over". I think
mine would fall into this class. But hey, so would all these Jeeps that have the
external Jerry cans. I have been stopped several times by cops. I thought "this is
it, my first ticket for the drop tanks." But when they come walking up, I usually
get "Those are so cool man. I just had to stop you and ask what are they." To which
I usually respond "beer." After their jaw is back in place I tell them they are long
range tanks for my cross country driving. The conversation usually ends with "so
cool, man" from the cop, and I am on my way. Like I said, those cops.....
In as far as the construction, I can send you pics on the frame. I got tired of
adding hours on to my trips stopping for gas. One day off I spend 6 hours with a mig
wielder and a "VW Trends" magizine (they are dune buggy gas tanks). I figgured if I
am going to do it, I might as well go for broke. Figgured how much gas I needed to go
from El Paso to Vegas(657 miles) and started wielding. I can make it on a good day
non-stop in 8 and 1/2 hours non-stop driving with two gallons left.
In as far as the handeling, THEY SUCK!!! It is over 100 pounds of fuel on the back
seat. The best way I can describe it is having a fat chick on the back who will not
lean into the turns!!!!(Sorry for the chick referance Lisa, tell Mike hi). It is a
real blast when they are half way empty though. The fuel sloshes to the rear, the oil
light comes on, and the front tire come up!!!! Yaaa Hoooo!!!! Mades burn outs a real
pain in the A$$. The down force gives you too much grip and you skip the front tire.
