If your doing it on your 85 model, it's not that easy. The air equalizer 
assemblies below the top triple clamps wont allow sliding the inner fork 
tubes up. You would have to seal the air holes in the inner tubes which are 
under the equalizer rings, probably by welding or possibly JBweld if it was 
really clean.

Now if it's on a 93 and up model... Just slide those babies up in the clamps 
and watch your front fender/radiator clearance.

The alternate and preferable method would be to add a 1" spacer between the 
dampener rod and the fork inner tube (where the dampener 'topping-out' 
spring is located), and removing a corresponding amount from the spacer tube 
which is on top of the main fork spring (which, of course, would be 1"). 
This method will also allow an additional amount of inner tube/slider 
overlap which should reduce fork flex by some immeasurable amount.

Of course, the down side to the second method is you have to take the fork 
tubes apart (a good time to replace the seals).
