Larry,
You don't have to run the bike before changing oil, that's a
myth!!. Metal particles will drop to the bottom of your oil pan when the
engine has been off for a while.
I usually leave the plug off and drop about a pint of clean
oil, just to flush any residue it may be left at the bottom of the pan,
then I proceed to install the plug and pour the rest of the oil, also
(this may sound anal to some of you) I fill the oil filter with oil
before installing it, a very tricky task if you own a 1985, like I do...
