Steve
A couple of years ago I built a bike for my
brother and he decided he needed to lengthen
the swingarm by 2 inches. He had it lengthened
by a Mad Scientist to the toon of about 900.00.
We set out on a Saturday for a fifty mile run to
the beach to shake the bugs out of the rebuild.
I was riding and started to cross an intersection
and the driveshaft failed, took a few years out of
my life I'm sure staring at the oncoming traffic!
Anyway I called the scientist after looking at the
shaft and seeing something that resembled a farm
repair for the extension of the shaft and was told
that I had beaten on the bike which had caused
the failure and that I could purchase a special
dragrace version for 200.00 more dollars.Sorry
for the long winded story but I ended up having
to make a shaft. I used 7/8 4140 material and
heavy press fit the ends of a stock shaft into the
new length of shaft it was then preheated and tig
welded so the strength of the material was not
lost. The shaft has held through numerous torture
sessions.I don't think one piece 2" over shafts are
available and I don't recommend the type of repair
I just explained.Has anybody out there had a similar
experience?
