I like the part about "WHEN" detonation bites you not if it'll bite you... 
I've seen the ring lands break off almost all the way round a piston and 
holes burned thru the sides of pistons you could throw a cat thru.

Supercharged powerplants can be fragile as egg shells at 200% of their 
design output.

You are right that 5/7 psi boost will only make someone want MORE MORE MORE. 
It is such fun that you get over your head really quick... Back in the 
'70's, Our crew decided that 60psi wasn't enough so we up'ed it to 67.5 psi 
of boost... guess what? the block let go and the crankshaft wound up on the 
ground...  And it wasn't in a car this happened but in a racing P-51 mustang 
at RENO.
Almost lost the plane and pilot with that mishap. Those engines (Merlin 
V-12's) were designed to handle 30 psi of boost from the factory.

20 psi in a V-max is very very respectable,,,, I bet your arms are a couple 
of inches longer that they use to be!
