Here's what I've done to check where this pulsating sound is coming
from. I, also, might add that I would here this sound in 5th gear from
about 70 to 85 mph on both of the maxes that I had at, one time, and the
sound would be at a faster rate and sound more like ring rung ring rung
ring rung. Well, I tried 3 different final drives, 1 new driveshaft, 1
new u-joint and had part of the middle gear pulled out and reshimmed
and checked by 3 different dealers. All these parts were just fine and
noise is still there. My current max has 43k on it. I've ridden it to
Sturgis 3 times ( 1300 miles round trip ) and once down to the 4
corners area (1800 miles round trip ) and the sound has always been
there but it never has gotten any worse than what it is. It's sound
exactly like an old u-joint going out of an old car. I think, it's the
ring gear in the final drive that I'm hearing. I know I could locate the
sound if I could put a good load on the drivetrain while the bike is
running on it's centerstand but I can't. I wonder if putting the bike on
a dyno would produce enough of a load to bring out the sound? I might
try this next.
