Hi Steve, I usually relocate the gear I plan on using into a padded
backpack designed for laptop computers. I use bubble wrap and
electrical tape to wrap and protect the lenses. It cost me about $30 at
Costco. I carefully consider which lenses I plan on using and usually
bring my mini tripod. If I really need to take ALL my gear, I use two
bungie nets an fasten the bag and full sized tripod to my sissy bar. As
I've mentioned before on the list, I don't like the look of my sissy bar
but it works great for securing small amounts of cargo and passenger
comfort. The last thing I want to see is my camera bag bouncing behind
me on the freeway.

Good luck,
PDA (Also a Nikon man - N2020, FM2 and EM)
