You have to connect the green wire to the gray, on the back of the stock tach.
The red goes to a "switched" positive, (since I don't use the parking front lights, 
I've connected mine to that line)
The black one goes to ground.
If you set the light (according to the instructions) to 2 cylinders, you can use the 
correct RPM's you want it to go on, (i.e. 9,000 RPM)
If you set it up to 8 cylinders, you have to set it up for HALF (i.e. 4,500 RPM)
(Know what I mean Vern??)
