Dave,
HID lamps require only 35 watts after ignition...to ignite, a high voltage
is applied across the electrodes in side of the bulb, like a spark plug
firing. Once the arc is established, it only requires the 35 watts to feed
it...there are other slightly higher (50 and 70 or 75 watt) HID bulbs, but
I'm not sure if they are here in the US for vehicle lighting. Nothing beats
them in terms of output...no filament bulb, regardless of what the marketing
says on the packaging!

The only problem with using true HID bulbs is that you will need 2 housings,
one for low beam and one for high, since the HID can't do dual beams like a
standard H4 bulb does. The low beam HID has a shield over approx half the
arc, so you get the same type of "cut-off" on low beam as an H4...the high
beam HID buld has no shield, and acts like the H4 high beam.

Also, you'll need to find a place, depending on how much lead they come
with, to mount the ballast/ignitors for the bulbs...

I haven't put them on my Max (I have worked with HID {xenon short-arc} for
awhile), but if you do let me know how the install goes.

hope that essay helps,
Mike D
