Perhaps "winter" means "6 months of rain" in Portland, but here in Michigan it often means "snow" and "ice". While liquid water won't hurt a motorcycle, the frozen variety can have some very nasty effects on it and its rider. There's nothing quite like the layer of salt that remains after a good snowfall, either - you'd be surprised at just how slippery it can make a road, even after all the ice is gone. I think that by studding my tires, maybe I can finally be considered a real rider and not just the social type. I guess it just isn't enough to consistantly ride 8 months out of the year.
