water temp gauge / water manifold

I am in the process of installing an autometer mechanical water temp gauge.  
Which involves welding a hub onto the water manifold to accept the larger 
sensor.  Does anyone know what material the water manifold is made out of?  I 
am assuming aluminum but my welder thought it may be magnesium.  Any idea?
