Larry,
The procedure for checking the valves is outlined in the service
manual. You can determine TDC by using the flywheel marks, (there are
two .. 70 degrees apart of course), or since you have the valve
cover(s) off anyhow it is quite easy to see when each set of valves is
sitting on the bottom ramp of the camshaft ... FYI .. the shim,
(lifter disc), chart in the manual is not accurate ....... I would
also recommend actually using a torque wrench on the valve covers ....
they live for the opportunity to warp ......
