Gary,
IMHO .. any of the glass mat batteries ... the Odyssey, Baker etc ..
will perform much better than a liquid lead acid battery, (like the
stocker). This is because they have a lower internal resistance,
(among other things), and will charge back up quicker, (the one in my
Royal will eat up to 10 amps for up to 30 min .. of course it will be
fully charged by then). A liquid lead acid battery can not take a
charge that fast, (and really use it ... you will cook it or you will
just surface charge on top of a sulfate layer). So .. after you start
your Max with the liquid battery .. you need to get out on the road an
ride a while to expose the battery to excess stator output long enough
for it to get what it needs. With the AGM battery ... those little
blips around town often produce enough short duration amperage excess
to be of some benefit because it will actually get used ...... In
addition to the quicker recovery with normal driving ... it is also
able to dispense amperage at a higher rate for short durations than a
liquid lead acid battery with the same CCA rating, (again due to the
lower internal resistance ... I = E/R). Then .. on top of that ...
these things don't self discharge as quick when sitting idle ...
sooooooooo .. when you don't ride for a couple of weeks ... you have a
better chance that you will be able to get started, (plus liquid lead
acid batteries start sulfating the plates when you get into the 12.40
range ... not so with the absorbed glass mat battery ......). If that
isn't enough ... because of the construction .. you will also be able
to achieve a higher AH and CCA rating in the same size case ... you
can throw away the rotted rubber hose that you never re-connected
properly the last time you changed your other battery ... and if you
drive off the side of a hill ... and have to lay there for a while
with Mr. Max on top of you .. they work OK upside down .......
