I have heard of some doing a test by drilling a small hole where the
tire would most closely meet the shaft, sticking a safety pin or
paperclip through , and measuring the free play.  You can put a dab
of silicone on the hole when you are done.  There is said to be quite
a difference in the amount of free play going from one Max to the
next.
