Well, this *is* an exponential-time regexp.

Most of the observed difference was due to Firefox's optimization to not even compute regexp results that weren't used. See the FF29 numbers in http://jsperf.com/regex-exponential-blowup/5 for what happens when the result is used.

Also, in the meantime this has been "fixed" in Firefox; Chrome 39 is now twice as fast as FF 33 :-P
