Patchset 1 is a revert of the revert.
Patchset 2 moves the push of this_function to earlier since SetVar
overwrites
the registry.
This fixes the test failures. This does not handle the issues I discovered
related to eval and lazy parsing. I will take care of that in a followup CL.
