Looks like it's an issue with use of AVX instructions on these machines.
If I run with --noenable_avx there is no slowdown while profiling. Use of
AVX was introduced in January:
https://chromium.googlesource.com/v8/v8/+/03fbb053b39b4765a5b848e4b3dddbccb8d19889
so profiling on these macs (and presumably other machines with the same
cpu) has been broken since then :(
