Subject: [v8-dev] S8 - Smalltalk on V8 engine

Dear Mads,
My name is Alejandro, I have been involved in smalltalk development from 1989. I am one of the referents and promotors of smalltalk in Latin America, etc...
In the last three years I have been working with Frank Lesser
(Lesser-sfotware http://www.dng.st )
in the design of a high perfomance VM for Smalltalk, to host what
we called Smalltalk Next Generation; it was formulated as minimal changes
and extension to smalltalk semantics to promote mutation
of smalltalk environments.
(to do not distract with details I will ommit some paragraphs here)
I have designed a path to mutate smalltalk platforms used in
industry (Visual Smalltalk and Dolphin smalltalk) between 1995 and 2005
as part of Next Generation proposal,...
A few months ago, I started a new alternative.
It is not based on a "new smalltalk" VM mantained by reduced
number of gurus...
It is based on a VM that can run Smalltalk efficiently
and an open source VM.
The VM (as I am sure) you can guess is V8.
I have implemented minimal proof of concept and made some
measurements of efficiency. I am happy with results and working
on material to make presentations of advances.
I also presented project proposal to sustain the works to
build S8 (the smalltalk platform on top of V8 and javascript)
to a minimal number of companies with real needs to run their
smalltalk based products in a new platform. It has been two
weeks from presentation of project proposal, so it is recent
to expect responses. Technical oriented people received
the proposal with excitement.
I am looking for more companies interested in the project;
it will be open source and formulated as a platform to mutate
current smalltalk environments (starting from the environments that
are of interest in industry).
Can you help me to find people/companies interested in supporting
this kind of project?
Do you know of any person or company interested in
this kind of alternative for smalltalk?
thank you in advance for any feedback and kudos
for the great work you are doing on V8.
cheers,
Ale.
