Danno, this change is rebased on your new work, and my updated patch for
the gc.
Again, I combined everything, to let the GC code be easily testable. But
this is
a whole lot of commits clubbed together, and is probably not very
reviewable.
I'm fine with you taking this if you want, but if you prefer individual
changes,
I can break them up and submit that way also. Just let me know you
preference.
