Rafael ran into this today when analyzing the performance of
Array.prototype.forEach, which uses the "in" operator inside its loop (to
check that the current index is present in the array). This produces a
noticeable slowdown when using forEach compared to a for loop. "in" has a
slight optimization over hasOwnProperty in that it handles Smi indexes as
ints, rather than converting them to strings, but it's still much slower
than doing an indexed lookup.
