My main issue with template is mostly the mismatch it has with what we
need. I was looking into not using templates (except for setting the
internal number of fields and allowing interceptors). Mostly as an exercise
to see if it would work.
For DOM, almost everything is defined on the prototype so there aren't that
many things to set up. A few hundred constructors and prototypes. And
AFAICT, the work to set up the prototype, whether using a template or not
looks pretty much identical.
However, at this point, I'm going to try to see if I can make changes (or
file bugs) to Template to better support what we need.
