As usual, as soon as I sent the message, I managed to find the answer to 
one of these, at least -- the library I was trying to remember is 
"readline".

But in the course of researching that, I found "D8", which apparently is 
a more advanced shell... possibly the answer to question (1) above. 
There appears to be no documentation on it, but I found a few references 
in the archives, like this one:

But it's not clear to me how I would build (or otherwise obtain) D8. 
Can anyone share a clue?
