I wouldn't be too sure about that being the issue.  Whatever gcc for Minix
is compiling to must be compatible with what Minix can execute.  Otherwise,
what's the point of having gcc at all on Minix?

ELF is a simple thing, really.. even if ELF support were required, would it
really be hard for someone to implement?

That just doesn't sound right to me.
