The tags and branches in the git mirror are created manually, which understandably is done in batches. The git mirror usually doesn't have tags for the current trunk version, only after it has been branched.
IMO this is perfectly fine, as pre-branching tags are not very useful anyway. If you want some measure of stability, you should use the tip of one of the branches (currently 3.13.7.5 / 3.14.5.2); otherwise SVN revisions of trunk/bleeding_edge commits are the best versioning indicator (you can still fetch them from the git log messages, e.g. when it says "git-svn-id: https://v8.googlecode.com/svn/branches/*bleeding_edge@13054*ce2b1a6d-e550-0410-aec6-3dcde31c8c00" it's SVN revision 13054 of the bleeding_edge branch).
