Deutsche Welle is Germany's international media organisation with television
and radio broadcast via satellite and also an online news network. It is
considered to be a link to Germany for German speakers around the world but it
also broadcasts in several other languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic
and Chinese. I work for the English online site. We focus mainly on German and
European issues ranging from politics and economics to culture and travel. You
may have a look at www.dw-online.de to see exactly what we do.

My motivations for the feature and particularly for wanting to interview people
who work on the ships and possibly travel with them is two fold; on a personal
level I am interested because every day I ride my bicycle to work along the
Rhine and I see the ships passing by. I always wonder where are they going?
What is their cargo? What is life like for the people who live on these ships?

Secondly, I noticed that the European Commission would like to promote the use
of inland shipping and that one of the ways they would like to do this is
through the media. I think the public would be very interested in learning
about the important role inland shipping plays in Europe and also about the
kind of life people live on these ships and also the career opportunities
offered by the industry. A personal account of life on a ship I think would
greatly assist in helping readers to understand the realities of inland
navigation.

I realise that a request to spend some time on a ship is a big one, however I
am flexible regarding the timing of this. The only problem is that someone on
board would need to speak some English (or Italian as I can speak this
fluently) in order for me to interview them properly.
