Ed,
We had a '72 Overlander that we removed the carpet from. It came
up just like carpet in a house with tack strips around the edges. I don't
know about the older models though, they could be glued down. Our trailer
had a lot of residual odors that we were able to get rid of with a little
cleaning. I replaced the carpet with linoleum, had our upholsterer make
new cushions, cleaned the curtains and then we scrubbed the
walls/cabinets. In other words we got rid of all the things with fibers
that trap odors and then cleaned everything else. There was an amazing
layer of grunge on all the walls, but once they were scrubbed it was like
new. You should be able to get the smell out if you clean
thoroughly. Good luck.
