According to the ISU library on line catalog
(http://www.lib.iastate.edu/webpac-bin/wgbroker?new+-access+prodcat)
they have Mechanics Illustrated Magazine from 1902 through some time in
1992, mostly on the shelf but some on microfilm. They are indexed in the
Reader's Guide to Periodic Literature which are also available in
reference. I didn't find them on line.

If the article can be identified closer than the year, E.g. issue and
page, the article should be available through any library by
interlibrary loan.
