Hi all -
polishing "really" happens at high rpms - 2800 to 3200
RPM's. below that what you are really doing is
"smoothing" rather than brightening..
this can be a good thing because one of the most
common problems you'll see in a polish job is
cloudiness... what that means is that the aluminum has
poor color - it should appear deep and transparent -
that is what is meant by color.
On the other hand, reflectivity, though it is somewhat
affected by color, happens at high RPM.
I polished a panel with burnishing bars and a die
grinder once. the "color" wasn't even because the
buffing wheel was only 1/4" wide. But, since the
wheel was spinning at somewhere between 15,000 and
28,000 RPM, the panel was so reflective it "halo'd" at
night time - it literally reflected enough light to
create a halo of reflected light around itself.
